How inertia is holding you back and what you can do about it

Today, I wanted to talk to you about inertia.

According to Wikipedia:

Inertia is the tendency of objects in motion to stay in motion, and objects at rest to stay at rest, unless a force causes its speed or direction to change.

But I'm not here to talk about physics.

You may have noticed an analogous experience in your personal life.

When you're lying in bed, doing nothing, you'll continue laying there until some strong motivation propels you to get up and do something.

Similarly, when you're focused on a task, if someone interrupts you and asks you to stop what you're doing and do something else, you resist stopping what you're doing to do that other thing instead.

In other words, inertia can prevent you from:

  • writing that blog post you wanted to publish this week,
  • being flexible when things don't go according to plan,
  • and collaborating effectively with other people.

Where in your life has inertia been unhelpful recently?

Looking back, you may have noticed a few places where you wish you had done things differently.

So, what can you do to interrupt inertia?

Here are some examples:

  • Make your goals readily visible.
  • Remind yourself of what is important to you.
  • Celebrate your wins, progress, and successes.
  • Start with tasks that are fast, easy, and simple.
  • Schedule regular breaks to interrupt your schedule intentionally.
  • Practice mindfulness and watch out for when you're attached to something.
  • Visualize things that may prevent you from starting, or that might go wrong, and brainstorm ways you could respond in those circumstances.

You know that feeling on January 1st? The fresh start energy. The "this year will be different" feeling. The list of goals that feel both exciting and totally achievable. But you know what usually happens by March. Here's the thing: you're not failing because you don't plan well enough. You're failing because you're trying to execute on everything simultaneously, which means you're not actually giving anything the attention it deserves. The most common execution problem I see with ambitious...

Hit reply and let's chat 😊 I wasn't expecting a raise or promotion this year, so I let my brag doc slide. Big mistake. 🤦♀️ Now it's December, and I need to write my self-assessment. I'm staring at a blank document, trying to remember what I did in February. Or March. Or honestly, even two months ago. This was going to take forever, and I was dreading it. A brag doc would...
